Utilizing Mind-Body Yoga Techniques For Emotional Healing
Presenter: Maureen Cohee, MSW, LSCW, RYT

Many of us find yoga to be the medicine we were looking for to help us tolerate physical and sensory experiences associated with anxiety, fear and past trauma. Now, empirical evidence supports the use of yogic techniques to reduce symptoms associated with trauma and post traumatic stress disorder.

In this experiential workshop we identify ways in which the body 'remembers' traumatic experiences, and explore how use of mindful movement, mindful breath and mantra can facilitate the body's potential for effective healing.  Further, we consider use of trauma-sensitive language to restore autonomy and initiative and identify ways to respond to hypo-arousal, hyper-arousal and emotional flooding in the context of the session.

  • Define Trauma and its impact on the mind, body and spirit

  • Create an environment of safety

  • Learn specific grounding techniques to align the physical and neuro-physical experience of self

  • Learn specific breathing techniques to engage the parasympathetic nervous system - relaxation response

  • Use verbal and non-verbal language that promotes choice-making and restores initiative

  • Discuss specific challenges to managing symptoms of hyper-arousal and flooding
